Allen Andrade, the man found guilty of the murder of Angie Zapata, was sentenced on Monday to life plus sixty years. He was convicted of killing Zapata with a fire extinguisher. His "habitual" crime record allowed the judge to be harsher in his sentencing.
This crime which was tried as hate crime was just another example of the trans-violence and transphobia that surfaces at an all to common rate. Following a sexual encounter and after learning that Zapata had male genetalia, Andrade snapped and proceeded to beat Zapata with the first available weapon he could find, a fire extinguisher.
Let's be real - there are some beautiful transgender individuals walking this planet and some of them will never be clocked. They live their life stealth or undetectable. So the reality is that there may be some men that have sex with a transgender person unknowingly. But if a person should find out the reaction should never be violence, especially violence to the point of death. And I'm not saying its okay to go into sexual relations with a person under false pretenses. I'm just saying it's never okay to beat or kill someone following a freak out. My heart still goes out to the family of Zapata and kudos to the judge for the sentencing.
