Our President, who I have not been hesitant to say has been dragging his feet on LGBT issues, is starting to make some stride. No we have not seen an end to Don't Ask, Don't Tell. No we have not seen a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. Not we don't have and LGBT inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act. But he did recognize the month of June as Gay Pride month. He did sign an order granting limited domestic partner benefits to gay and lesbian federal employees. And yesterday the President invited some LGBT leadership to the White House to honor Stonewall.
In case you haven't heard, Stonewall is the event that is recognized for triggering the modern gay rights movement. I do appreciate the gesture Obama is offering by hosting this event. I think this may be a way of trying to smooth relations with the gay community, cause Lord knows he could use the help.
During the event he made the following comment, "I know that many in this room don't believe that progress has come fast enough, and I understand that. It's not for me to tell you to be patient, any more than it was for others to counsel patience to African Americans who were petitioning for equal rights a half century ago. But I say this: We have made progress and we will make more. And I want you to know that I expect and hope to be judged not by words, not by promises I've made, but by the promises that my administration keeps."
I still have high hopes for the President and I hope he delivers on some of the promises he made while campaigning. I will try to be patient and see. You can see a clip from the event below.

One of the things I enjoy about your spot is you try and use common sense on glbt issues and this is a good example of that. While many in the glbt community are not happy with Obama at all and are more vicious than any GOP voter, I'm more than pleased with what he has done in all of six months, hopefully others who are not happy will reserve judgement until his term is up. The man made promises to almost every demographic group in this country and I for one think he will try and own them but in the world of DC politics or even here in Phoenix, it isn't going to happen overnight.
